Der Erste Schultag

The "Erste Schultag" (First School Day) is such a milestone for kids and families alike in Germany!

We began with the traditional 15 km uphill hike to the church.  Just kidding. :)  It did feel like a long walk though--it was in the 80s that day!  We encountered one of Drew's classmates on the way.  Aren't they so cute carrying their schültuten and wearing their schulranzen?

First the kids had a church service at the Stadtkirche Böblingen.

Then we walked over to the Schule for a big assembly.  This school is called a "Grundschule" (literally "foundation" school, but we would call it an elementary school) and it has students in grades 1-4.  The older kids sang songs to welcome the new first graders.

Look at all those new backpacks!
The kids were each assigned to a classroom/teacher and went to their new classroom for about an hour.  When we got home, the boys opened their schültuten!  Drew received new lunchboxes, some school supplies like fun erasers, a couple little toys, a new book, etc.

Typically families have a party afterwards to celebrate the first day of school.  Wish all of our family could have been here to celebrate with us!  We were happy to be invited to a friend's party. :)

  1. Hi, Kelly! Happy Valentine's Day! I liked seeing more pics from Drew's first day of school. Looks like he has the biggest cone!! He's an American, after all. The community involvement is wonderful. I like how everyone cheers the kids on. And it's nice that the older kids welcome the younger ones. You'll miss the German schools when you move back to the US.
