After a brief stop in Luxemburg at the pirate ship playground (Click HERE to read that post), we arrived in Bruges at dusk.

Our first look at the chocolate shops in Belgium
We stayed in the nicest B&B--it was such a treat! Jim is really good at finding these gems on booking.com. Last time I picked the hotel the beds had holes in the sheets. :-o The decor in this B&B was so fancy and the owner had thought of everything. Once she saw we had kids, she left a box of toys and books in our room for the kids to play with. She also put little bags of Belgian chocolates by our bedside each day--on the second day, she left little bags of animal crackers with a balloon next to the kids' bed!
We had breakfast brought to our room the next morning! This eating area was also great for us for dinner. We got take-out for dinner each night and ate it at this little table instead of sitting down at restaurants--much easier with the kids.
The B&B was located right on the canal (red brick building with turquoise door).
The best way to see Bruges is by boat!
William was a little nervous on the boat. The Spanish women next to us were entertaining him. :) The boat tour guide was amazing the way he seamlessly switched from French to German to English to Spanish!
I enjoyed lots of hot chocolate on this trip.
We found a playground for the kids!
It happened to be the weekend of the Grand Prix (or something like it?) so there were tons of old cars and car aficionados.
Oh, and lots of geese and swans too.
When I look at this picture, I hear action hero music in my head.
Where's Waldo?
William likes to hike his pants up or take off his shoes. Keeps riding in the stroller interesting. ;-)
"A Place Beyond Belief"
My favorite part of the day was looking in the chocolate shops in the evening. It was so busy on this little side street and the stores were inviting and warm looking.
William was whining a lot by this point so he got free chocolate from the shop keeper. Smart kid.
They make hot chocolate by dipping a big chocolate square on a stick into a cup of hot foamed milk.

Making Mom nervous
Wow, what a beautiful city! I love that you get out and do things like the boat tour even though the kids aren't so sure. Your kids are so lucky, they are growing up with travel!
ReplyDeleteYour B&B looked awesome, good job Jim! The breakfast looked so elaborate, and I agree, so nice to get takeout and eat it in a comfortable place :-)
PS: Violet also hikes up her pants like that! (and sometimes takes of socks/shoes, though that's usually in the car). It's impossible to keep her pant legs down, even when it's cold!
Kelly, did you talk to the Spanish women in Spanish? Or German? Or English? You're very multi-culti these days.
ReplyDeleteWe didn't say much, she played peek a boo with William and I liked listening to her and her friends talk in Spanish. There is a mom at Drew's school who speaks Spanish and when we try to talk, my Spanish is all jumbled up with German! It's not easy!
